New England Trip

Traveling with teenagers is different than traveling with younger kids. How? I don't know exactly, but I'm going to find out. This summer we are taking our first family road trip with three teenaged characters. Our daughter, Faith, who is almost 13, our son, Andrew, who is 14, and our oldest, Stephen, who is 18 and going to college in the fall. It may be the last mandatory trip for Stephen who already has a complete social calendar that seldom includes spending time with his blood-kin. Don't worry about him, though, he's got his cell and a plan with unlimited texting.

We are not inexperienced travelers, but this is our first family road trip in several years and the first one with all three kids in their capable, critical teens. What will they like? What will be lame? And can we avoid the bane of teenage life -- the boring and the uncool?

We chose to do a driving trip from our home in central Ohio to New England. None of us had ever been to Boston, and just a couple of short trips to New York and Philadelphia were our only experience with the East Coast. So New England, here we come!
